History

History Of INDIAN Astrology

Astrology is a natural science that dates back to 5000 BC. Ancient astrology is found in the part of Atharva Veda in the form of ‘Mahopanishat’ or ‘Jyothishmati’. As per Indian astrology every event in our life is based on position of celestial bodies at time, date and place of birth.   (Chart of solar system beside this paragraph)

Indian astrology uses the actual constellations of stars, position of planets and Sun as seen in the sky at the time of individual’s birth. Indian ancient astrology system gives a completely different chart as compare to the one used by western astrologers.

Indian astrology is the oldest system of astrology in the world differs considerably from the western and Chinese astrology.

The Origin

Our Ancient Rishi ( sages) like Shree Vashistha Rishi , Shree Bhrgu Rishi , and Shree Garga Rishi were the masters of astrology and made many predictions that were true. Before the beginning of Kali Yug (present time around 3102 BC) Shree Parasara Rishi (sage) wrote the astrology text called Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra. He also taught it to his disciple Shri Rishi Maitreya and so on. In this way the Indian astrology made a long journey. Indian astrology from India traveled to Persian, then to Babylonians. From this civilization to Greeks, Romans and Egyptians.

As per the estimates from Puranik time and the Archaeological Record, the Indian ancient astrology has the age of about 5000 BC. History of Astrology has its root in the Vedas of Hindu that are the oldest scriptures in the world.

The Vedas has six supplements also known as Vedangas or the limbs of the vedas. Jyotish Vedanga–Vedic astronomy and astrology on which the Indian ancient astrology is based is one of these.

Indian Ancient Astrology has six branches.

  • Gola: Positional astronomy
  • Ganita: Mathematical calculations to find Gola
  • Jataka: Natal astrology
  • Prasna: Answering question based on the time it is asked
  • Muhurta: Auspicious time to start anything
  • Nimitta: Omens and portents

INDIAN Astrology V/S Western Astrology & Chinese Astrology

Western Astrologypracticed for thousands of years in Arabia and Europe, is based upon a system, which uses the path of the sun through the heavens, as seen from planet Earth. It looks at the constellations, which used to lie along this path, now called the Zodiac. Western astrology is geocentric, that is, it considers the Earth as the centre around which the Sun revolves.

According to western astrology, the horoscope is made on the basis of the time of the birth of a person. The sun sign represents the sign of the Zodiac that the Sun passed through at the time of the birth of a person. The Sun rules the essential personality, ego and willpower of a person. It represents the core of the potential and distinctiveness of an individual.

The Origin

Modern astrology has as its roots the ancient celestial omen reading of Mesopotamia. The Mesopotamians lived in the area of modern-day Iraq betwen the Rivers of the Tigris and the Euphrates. They included the Sumerians, the Akkadians, the Babylonians and the Assyrians. The Babylonians (Chaldean Astrology) began to interpret the celestial cycles rather than random events, which developed into astrology proper.

But it wasn’t until the Ancient Greeks that the ecliptic (Sun’s path) was measured against the Earth and an exact solar calendar could be drawn up. Planets could now be fixed relative to the solstice and equinox points rather than simply relative to the four compass directions and the zenith and nadir points relative to the observer.

 Sun-Signs or Zodiac Signs

Zodiac signs, also called sun signs are determined by the date of birth of a person. Zodiac is made of 12 different sun signs, which are as follows:

Chinese Astrology

Chinese Astrology, based upon Ying-Yang and Five Elements, which are Metal, Water, Wood, Fire and Earth, developed independently of the western tradition. There are twelve signs in Chinese astrology as well but are based on a different zodiacal structure. Most people tend to stereotype Chinese astrology as an over-simplified system of one personality type that applies to everyone in a given year. However, this astrology has a set of interpretative rules and divisions of topic in life equally complex as western or Indian astrology. One will note the cultural influence in Chinese astrology delineations that reflects the importance of family and ancestors.

According to Chinese astrology, the year of birth tells your age but also indicates a certain phase or aspect of sixty year circle of time. In Chinese system of astrology, each year begins early in the calendar year on a new moon and relates to one of the twelve animals. Their qualities animate the year and color it with their distinct natures. People born in a particular animal year share certain common traits in the same manner as people born in common zodiac do.

The Origin

The origins of Chinese astrology are not exactly known but most of the methods may have developed in the time period equated with the Middle Ages in the West.

The modern practice of Chinese astrology tends to focus on the Four Pillars and the 5 elements, Earth, Fire, Water, Wood and Metal. Each person has characteristics of four animal signs as well as four elemental combinations. The year, month, day and hour signs present different aspects of the personality.
